Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari
New Zealand's most ambitious conservation project offers a variety of bush walks including a 16m canopy tower, a range of guided day and night tours and an informative Visitor Centre. Highly recommend the Tuatara Hunt Tour.
Mt. Pirongia
About 22km from Te Awamutu (959m) with a range of walking tracks for all ages.
Mt. Kakepuku
About 11km from Te Awamutu. A 1½ - 2 hour walk to the summit (450m).
Yarndley's Bush
An easy 30-minute walk though one of the largest Kahikatea stands in the North.
Walter Scott Bush Reserve
At Ngutunui, on the way to Kawhia. Includes two easy/moderate walks—one is about 30 minutes and the other is about 2 hours.
Lake Ngaroto
Popular for sailing and Includes a relatively easy 90-minute walk around the lake. The walkway is mostly flat and includes stretches of boardwalk, dirt and grass pathways.

Stewart Alexander Golf ClubThe Stewart Alexander Golf Course was opened in 1971 at its current location and is situated just 6km south west of Te Awamutu at 106 Budden Road, Pokuru. Stewart Alexander is a superb course on a rolling contour, in an attractive setting with rural views. Defined fairways lined with mature trees and excellent greens make our course appealing all year round, to golfers of all handicaps. The par 70 course has 7 green bunkers and a fairway bunker with a length of 5108 metres for men and 4798 metres for woman. The fairways have good shape with 2 or 3 doglegs. There are internal and boundary fenced paddocks, which are part of the course and grazed by sheep. In spring the joy of the new lambs is always a pleasure to see.
Pirongia Golf Club Most clubs have a characteristic or two which sets them apart from other clubs and Pirongia is no exception. An obvious feature is the background setting of Mount Pirongia with its tidy, pastured,lower slopes, contrasting against the bush clad upper reaches. The close proximity to the bush provides, particularly during the spring months, an abundance of tui, as well as smaller numbers of kaka (NZ native parrot) and kereru, our native pigeon. Additional to this, the Waipa River and its tributary, the Mangapiko Stream, enhance the view from parts of the course.
