Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari
New Zealand's most ambitious conservation project offers a variety of bush walks including a 16m canopy tower, a range of guided day and night tours and an informative Visitor Centre. Highly recommend the Tuatara Hunt Tour.
Mt. Pirongia
About 22km from Te Awamutu (959m) with a range of walking tracks for all ages.
Mt. Kakepuku
About 11km from Te Awamutu. A 1½ - 2 hour walk to the summit (450m).
Yarndley's Bush
An easy 30-minute walk though one of the largest Kahikatea stands in the North.
Walter Scott Bush Reserve
At Ngutunui, on the way to Kawhia. Includes two easy/moderate walks—one is about 30 minutes and the other is about 2 hours.
Lake Ngaroto
Popular for sailing and Includes a relatively easy 90-minute walk around the lake. The walkway is mostly flat and includes stretches of boardwalk, dirt and grass pathways.
